RIVETS FOR THE STEERING COLUMN OF A CAR
The challenge of movement
Case study
Fixing and rotation: how to combine an antithesis
We decided to seize the challenge of a car manufacturer: creating a rivet for the steering column that would guarantee high shear and tensile resistance, however allowing the rotation of the spin to move the steering wheel.
Thanks to a deepened study of the application and several laboratory tests, our technical support has identified the appropriate fastening system.
The result is a special structural rivet, which fully responds to Automotive specifications.
“Sariv was able to understand our needs and develop the mechanical features we were looking for”.
You know the simple movement that allows you to move your steering wheel towards you, or move it away?
It looks easy, right? In fact, it’s the result of hours and hours of studies and tests.
That’s what our team took care of when the project manager of a well-know car manufacturer asked us to find the solution for their steering column.
In summary? We had to design a blind rivet that had high shear and tensile strength to avoid collapsing into the impact, but reduced clamping force to allow the spin rotation to move the steering wheel.
Our technical dept. immediately focused on a structural rivet, but which one would be more suitable to the purpose?
After several tests on the application and laboratory analysis, we came up with producing a steel Saribulb blind rivet with the following characteristics: zinc-nickel treatment; ad hoc mandrel mechanical resistance; ad hoc gripping process.
All of this together ensures that the rivet clamps only slightly the two components assembled, allowing rotation between them without losing shear resistance.
The flexibility of our technicians and the possibility to manage the creation of the rivet from the design to the final assembly has allowed us to customize the processing and mechanical features of our standard product to find the right application for our Customer.
Our satisfaction is even greater if we consider that the standards of Automotive industry are very high, for obvious reasons of safety.
Who knows, there might be some of our rivets in your car!
