BLIND RIVETS FOR VEHICLE SPEAKERS
A viable alternative to die and screw
Case study
Production time optimization thanks to blind rivets
The project manager of a well-known vehicle manufacturer has turned to us to find an alternative to the use of die and screw to fix the car speaker to the door.
Our team has identified the most suitable rivet for the application.
In just a few weeks, the time to install their audio systems has been halved.
“Turning to the use of blind rivets, we have reduced by 50% the time of installation of the speakers in our cars”.
You know when you’re installing a blind rivet on a plastic surface? You try to pull it enough for it to be fixed, but you cannot pull it too much otherwise the plastic will crack. And of course it happens: the plastic breaks.
So what do you think? I’ll use a bolt, so I can measure force and avoid damage.
But what do you find out? It takes double time, and you can’t afford it.
Especially if you are an important car manufacturer, and you have to keep up with one of the most competitive and demanding sectors in the market.
That is where SARIV comes into play: we absolutely had to find a solution that would optimize our Customer installation times, reducing costs, and guaranteeing the same reliability of the products they used before.
What our Customer used before turning to us was precisely screw and die, fastening the plastic speaker to the metal sheet of the car door. So two different types of material, to be fixed with two objects to be installed one after the other.
Why not try instead with only one valid substitute? That’s exactly what our technical office did.
Starting from the application analysis, we designed an ad hoc solution: an aluminum/steel rivet of the multi-grip type to fill the over-sized hole; a low-strength soft nail to prevent plastic breakage; and mechanical features ensuring a good resistance to the vibrations the car is subject to during travel.
Using only one fastening system instead of two, we have allowed our Customer to reduce costs and halve installation times, while maintaining the high quality standards required by a selective industry such as Automotive.
